Artist of the Day / Paul Jenkins / New York City / (July 12, 1923 – June 9, 2012)

Paul Jenkins is probably only a new discovery to me, and I only found that he had recently died as I was gathering some info for this post.

“Art is not an antidote.  Art is fire.  It does something final to the opposition once and for all and then goes on.  The art may get lost, stolen, pre-empted, burned, caked with dust but this tree does not worry about hearing itself fall as it falls from grace…it is not concerned with permission.”   Paul Jenkins,  Paris,  1991

‘Jenkins created his abstract paintings by pouring primary colors — red, yellow, ultramarine blue, often with white and/or black — directly only onto loose, unstretched canvas. The pigment was allowed to pool and bleed as he directly manipulated the fabric and guided the paint with a long palette knife or a squeegee.”

Osage 1956

“Jenkins described himself as an “abstract phenomenist,” and beginning in the 1960s, the titles of all his paintings began with the word “Phenomena.”

Phenomena Blue Held Over 1975

“Regarding his paintings, he once said, “I have conversations with them, and they tell me what they want to be called.”

Phenomena Prime Meridian 2003

Until his death in New York City in June 2012, Jenkins continued to work in acrylic on canvas, as well as watercolor on paper.

I'm a self-taught artist who prefers to use found objects in ways that were never intended. I'm not interested in making 10 or 100 of the same object. This, of course, takes more time to make each piece. I also prefer a more minimalist look, where each part of a piece can be appreciated. I consider my clocks to be small sculptures with moving parts. And, my lamps to be small sculptures with light. My mirrors are reflective sculptures. DESTRUCTIVE TESTING means to push something to it's limits to understand it's structural performance or material behavior under different stresses. I interpret this in my artwork as using materials in different ways or combinations than they were designed to be used. I also just like the slightly ominous sound of the term...
