Artist of the Day / Angel Sotelo / Spain

One thing I find most compelling about Angel’s photographs is his composition.  Even his ‘family’ photos at the end, done with a camera phone display this.  As he posts each photo, he writes something thoughtful, and even poetic, about what he was thinking or trying to accomplish at the time.

“A great passion I have in the world of photography is to photograph rocks and stones.”

“I like to give them a personality and life itself as silent witnesses to our world that the viewer feel inside and the scene around them.”

“silence is all around me at this moment

I feel pressure on my eardrums

funny how at times my life has no sound track”

About destructivetesting

I'm a self-taught artist who prefers to use found objects in ways that were never intended. I'm not interested in making 10 or 100 of the same object. This, of course, takes more time to make each piece. I also prefer a more minimalist look, where each part of a piece can be appreciated. I consider my clocks to be small sculptures with moving parts. And, my lamps to be small sculptures with light. My mirrors are reflective sculptures. DESTRUCTIVE TESTING means to push something to it's limits to understand it's structural performance or material behavior under different stresses. I interpret this in my artwork as using materials in different ways or combinations than they were designed to be used. I also just like the slightly ominous sound of the term...

  1. I’m a big fan of Angel Sotelo’s work! I always look forward to his posts, both his photographs and his words. The second image you’ve included here (“as 3”) is among my very favorites. There is, as you say, something very special about his compositions. I also love the beautiful light and subtle tones of his photographs. There is always so much to take in. He gives us the opportunity to slow down and soak in all of the special details he has captured.

Angel has a special sensibility and his photography is an extension of it… Every photo he takes it could be perfectly be hanged on your dining room 😉

    • I agree. When I was copying the photos for this post, I just copied each in order, without leaving any out, until I had enough for the post. He doesn’t post any ‘bad’ photos.
