Making It / Found Metal Artifact Accent Lamp Number 101 / Michael Smith / Milwaukee, WI

I love using ‘found’ objects. This is some part of an exhaust system. Anybody can have something sleek and boring on their desk or shelf, but only adventurous individuals would choose something like this. If you aren’t that adventurous person, maybe you know someone who is that you can gift it to! I’ve mounted it on a beautiful Honey Locust base.

Nebula Explorer Sculpture / Michael Smith / Milwaukee, WI

This is another in my space theme series. I imagine it being flung into space like a giant frisbee. I’ve mounted it on a beautiful Zebrawood hardwood base.

Found Metal Artifact Accent Lamp Number 67 / Michael Smith / Milwaukee, WI

I love using ‘found’ objects. I’m not sure what these are, but they are rusty and cool looking. Anybody can have something sleek and boring on their desk or shelf, but only adventurous individuals would choose something like this. If you aren’t that adventurous person, maybe you know someone who is that you can gift it to! I’ve mounted it on a beautiful Walnut Burl base.

Making It / Found Metal Artifact Lamp Number 51 / Michael Smith / Milwaukee, WI

It’s curious how art/life happens sometimes.  I had ‘designed’ this piece without the large bolt on the front, but when I had the rest of it together, I decided it needed some weight on the front to make it more stable.  I looked in my piles of junk for something heavy, but relatively small, and it turned out to be this bolt.  Now, I can’t imagine this piece without the bolt.  It not only balances the work weight-wise, but aesthetically.

Making It / Found Metal Artifact Lamp Number 59 / Michael Smith / Milwaukee, WI

I love using ‘found’ objects. I don’t know what these pieces of metal were intended for, but they were in a large recycling bin, so that’s just what I did! I’ve mounted this on a beautiful Leopardwood base.

Making It / Found Metal Artifact Sculpture With Light Number 53 / Michael Smith / Milwaukee WI

I went to my local auto repair shop and asked my friend, the manager, what old parts he had for me. He just pointed out the back door, and told me to take what I wanted. This part, he told me, was from a steering column.  I like being able to take a piece of junk, mount it on a cool piece of wood, and call it a ‘sculpture’.

I’ve mounted this sculpture/lamp on a beautiful, interesting Walnut Burl base.

These bulbs can be found at http://www.1000bulbs.com/category/antique-light-bulbs.

Often, my pieces design themselves.  After I had mounted this piece on the base, I realized that I had mounted it upside down from what I had planned on.  I first started to think what I would have to do to ‘correct’ this mistake.  I quickly decided that it looked ‘right’ and better than my original plan!

Found Object Sculpture With Light Number 27 / Michael Smith / Milwaukee, WI

I had been looking at my various pieces of junk for awhile. My method is to go out to my garage/studio, have a cigarette, and try to imagine a way to put various found objects together into something interesting. I gradually pull different things into a group, move them around, and make a plan.

I’ve mounted this sculpture/lamp on a beautiful, interesting Cherry wood base.

This lamp measures 12″w x 8″d x 16″h. It features a vintage style light bulb. These bulbs can be found at http://www.1000bulbs.com/category/antique-light-bulbs.
