Artist of the Day / Grant Dupill / Del Rio, Texas

Grant’s aesthetic, work, and even sense of humor are about the closest to my own that I’ve come across.  So, of course, I think he’s a great guy, and artist!

“I started collecting and creating cool things 4 years ago after being stationed in a remote desert community and having few creative outlets available.  I decided to make my own fun, teaching myself to weld making “junk” sculptures which has swiftly evolved into fine furniture, art, and lighting fixtures.”

“I now have head full of ideas and a shop filled with some seriously bad-ass equipment which I use to preserve the past by by making it relevant today.”

“There is nothing more gratifying to me than finding the odd castaway treasure at the flea market, garage sale, or salvage yard and re-purposing, restoring, or passing it along as is.”

About destructivetesting

I'm a self-taught artist who prefers to use found objects in ways that were never intended. I'm not interested in making 10 or 100 of the same object. This, of course, takes more time to make each piece. I also prefer a more minimalist look, where each part of a piece can be appreciated. I consider my clocks to be small sculptures with moving parts. And, my lamps to be small sculptures with light. My mirrors are reflective sculptures. DESTRUCTIVE TESTING means to push something to it's limits to understand it's structural performance or material behavior under different stresses. I interpret this in my artwork as using materials in different ways or combinations than they were designed to be used. I also just like the slightly ominous sound of the term...
