Making It / 24″ Kitchen Whisk Table Lamp / Mike Smith

   The other day I was shopping at the Boelter Super Store (a large food service equipment supply wholesale store that is open to the public). I started looking around, and seeing all this amazing stainless steel sculpture. I really love kitchen tools! I wanted everything, and realized the only way I could justify buying it was if I was going to be able to make lamps out of it and put it in my store. So, that’s what I did!

I’ve mounted 24″ tall kitchen whisk on a beautiful piece of hardwood, and used a vintage style bulb. This is a really heavy duty whisk, beautifully made. Not just wire looped over the top, but designed to intersect and hold each other in place.


About destructivetesting

I'm a self-taught artist who prefers to use found objects in ways that were never intended. I'm not interested in making 10 or 100 of the same object. This, of course, takes more time to make each piece. I also prefer a more minimalist look, where each part of a piece can be appreciated. I consider my clocks to be small sculptures with moving parts. And, my lamps to be small sculptures with light. My mirrors are reflective sculptures. DESTRUCTIVE TESTING means to push something to it's limits to understand it's structural performance or material behavior under different stresses. I interpret this in my artwork as using materials in different ways or combinations than they were designed to be used. I also just like the slightly ominous sound of the term...

    this would go nicely with a metal desk…you should also show pictures of great shadows your lamps cast…show ambiance

    I always prefer to use table lamps that are using Light Emitting Diodes because they last longer and they generate less heat. ‘”.,.
