Artist of the Day / Stephen B. MacInnis

These 12″ square paintings are part of Stephen’s ‘Long Series’ (1031 and counting!)  I particularly like the thoughtful comments that he makes in each post.  You can follow what his thinking and feeling was as he works on each piece.

“The great thing about doing a large series of paintings is that I can afford to experiment. If the experiment works I’m happy, and if it fails I can view it as a learning experience and move on.”

“I was very happy with the results of this painting. The grid was drawn using a gold paint pen. I like the fact that the painting at first appears pretty, but if you look close it is rough and ugly. Does pretty + ugly = beauty?”

“I really like the effect of looking through layers of marks and images. I use certain marks and motifs and I have in effect made them my own, but I feel I need to expand my mark making and find new ways of drawing.”

“I’m exploring broken fragments of graphs. Irregular edges are another favorite that I keep working with.”

I consider my clocks to be small sculptures with moving parts. And, my lamps to be small sculptures with light. My mirrors are reflective sculptures. DESTRUCTIVE TESTING means to push something to it's limits to understand it's structural performance or material behavior under different stresses. I interpret this in my artwork as using materials in different ways or combinations than they were designed to be used. I also just like the slightly ominous sound of the term...
